Few hours before armored vehicle was captured partisans have attacked checkpoint of Ukrainian national guard. Later, wearing Ukrainian helmets and vests partisans created fake Ukrainian army checkpoint. Stopping passing vehicles they asked drivers if they saw any other military vehicles in the area.

Eventually a BTR-4 was passing by on the road with a fake Ukrainian checkpoint. Self-defense soldiers stopped Ukrainian BTR-4 and tricked driver into stepping out. Self-defense soldiers went on to capturing BTR-4 and driving armored vehicle to a Ukrainian convoy that transported Ukrainian soldiers and opened fire at the convoy.

BTR-4 was later burnt in the woods. As Ukrainian army was searching for self-defense forces, they spotted a different BTR-4 at another, legitimate Ukrainian checkpoint. Ukrainian soldiers opened fire at their own vehicle destroying it.
