Cost of maintenance and lack of qualified personnel are main reasons why Ukraine refused to buy Canadian F-18 fighter jets.

In the summer of 2014 Canadian government has announced that they are ready to give up to 20 F-18 jets to Ukraine free of charge. Each F-18 jets requires several thousand people to maintain jet’s flight. In addition, Ukrainian pilots would have to go back to school to learn how to fly these machines.

Yurii Birukov, Porosheko’s adviser announced on his Facebook account: “It’s true, we can’t afford these jets. We can’t pay for their maintenance. We can’t arm them (we have nothing to arm them with). And who’s gonna fly them? we don’t have special flight complexes and dispatchers. What bout radars and anti-aircraft missiles?”\
